Major General Spears is the state's fifth Adjutant General since 1926 and is the nation's only elected Adjutant General.
General Spears was first elected Adjutant General in the statewide General Election Nov. 8, 1994. He was sworn into office with the rank of Major General Jan. 11, 1995.
The South Carolina Military Department consists of three main elements:
the SC Army National Guard, the SC Air National Guard and State Operations.

The South Carolina Army National Guard
began in 1670 as the Colonial Militia defending
against threats from Spanish Florida and from native tribes like the Westoes. The
SC Army National Guard has participated in every major war and conflict from the
American Revolution through Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The South Carolina Air National Guard
was formed in December 1946. The SC Air National Guard was the first Guard unit in the nation assigned
the F-16 Fighting Falcon, one of the most sophisticated aircraft in the Air Force inventory
and has been awarded the presidential "Outstanding Unit Award" four times for its superior performance.

The 2010 South Carolina National Guard Youth Camp will be 25 July – 31 July at Camp Bob Cooper, 8001 M.W. Rickenbaker Road, Summerton,
SC 29184. The camp is perfectly situated on 110 acres on the beautiful shores of
Lake Marion. This camp is for dependants of National Guard Soldiers ages 10-13.
We have an exciting week planned with canoeing, hiking, swimming, and much more.
The cost is only $150 for an entire week.
For your older youth, we are in need of Jr. Counselors ages 14-17. We will help
them strengthen their leadership skills, and better prepare for the future. We are
also in need of adult volunteers to be Group Leaders, Counselors, and other staff
positions.
