The South Carolina Military Department consists of three main elements: the SC Army
National Guard, the SC Air National Guard and State Operations.
The South Carolina Army National Guard began in 1670 as the Colonial Militia defending
against threats from Spanish Florida and from native tribes like the Westoes. The
SC Army National Guard has participated in every major war and conflict from the
American Revolution through Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The South Carolina Air National Guard was formed in December 1946. The South
Carolina Air National Guard was the first Guard unit in the nation assigned the
F-16 Fighting Falcon, one of the most sophisticated aircraft in the Air Force inventory
and has been awarded the presidential "Outstanding Unit Award" four times for its
superior performance.
State Operations consists of several separate divisions: Budget and Finance, the
Department of Information Technology,
Construction and Facilities Management Office,
State Human Resources, the Youth Challenge Programs, the SC State Guard, the Emergency
Management Division, Starbase, SC Homeland Defense/AmeriCorps, Distance
Learning, McCrady Dining Facility, McCrady Billeting Operations, and Federal-State
Cooperative Agreements.
