Mr. John A. Shuler

DEPUTY ADJUTANT GENERAL FOR STATE OPERATIONS



John A. Shuler is employed by the Office of the Adjutant General and serves as Deputy Adjutant General for State Operations. In this position he is responsible for executive oversight of the South Carolina State Guard, Emergency Management Division, the SC Army National Guard Facility Program, and all state programs that support the South Carolina Military Department.

He was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and is a graduate of Bowman High School and the University of South Carolina.

John Shuler enlisted as a teenager in the South Carolina Army National Guard in 1956 and served 5 years before his acceptance in the South Carolina Army National Guard's Palmetto Military Academy. Upon graduation in 1962, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army National Guard where he has served as a traditional Guard member and on active duty with the Army. He has served in various positions of increasing responsibility and rose to the rank of Colonel.

His military education includes: Transportation and Quartermaster Officer Basic Courses, Ordnance and Quartermaster Officer Advanced Courses, and Command and General Staff College.

His awards and decorations include: The Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, National Defense Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Training Ribbon, The National Guard Association of the United States Valley Forge Cross for Heroic and Meritorious Service, South Carolina Exceptional Service Medal, South Carolina Meritorious Service Medal, South Carolina Palmetto Cross, South Carolina Service Medal, South Carolina State Guard Medal of Merit and State Guard Commendation Medal.

He retired from the Army National Guard in November 1997 after 41 years of service. He has served as a Brigade Maintenance Officer, Support Battalion Commander and as a Force Integration Officer.
