Title 25 - Military, Civil Defense and Veterans Affairs CHAPTER 17

SECTION 25-17-10. Military Museum; establishment; board members.

There is established the South Carolina Military Museum, located at one or more locations in the State as selected by the State Adjutant General. The museum is governed by the South Carolina Military Museum Board composed of seven members. Five members must be appointed by the Adjutant General for terms concurrent with that of the Adjutant General. The Adjutant General and the President of the South Carolina National Guard Association shall serve as members ex officio.

After many months of procuring exhibits, planning the display of the exhibits, building the cases and framework for the exhibits, and finally putting it all together, The South Carolina Military Museum hosted its GRAND OPENING on February 06, 2007 at its location on 1 National Guard Road in Columbia, South Carolina. Approximately 500 people turned out to support this event. The Museum is open daily and is free for all to come, enjoy, and appreciate.

ABOUT OUR ARTIFACTS AND COLLECTIONS

The museum has amassed an impressive collection of historical weapons and unique historical South Carolina artifacts.

The Museum is the home of one of only three remaining weapons from the "Lewis and Clark Expedition", an impressive "Weapons of War" collection, artifacts of the first British MI-5 007 Secret Agent, "Captain Peter Mason", an extensive rifle and handgun collection of David M. “Carbine” Williams and the former FBI Special Agent "Melvin Purvis'" unique collection including "John Dillinger’s" hat and his machine-gun. There is also and extensive collection of historical uniforms, cannons and military vehicles.

All funds and donations received are administered for the benefit of military historical, charitable, educational agencies and/or causes owned by, operated under the supervision of or supported by the SC Military History Foundation, Inc. The board consists of seven members who serve three-year long, staggered terms.

WORLD WAR II DATABASE
This database lists the names of all Military Personnel from South Carolina that served in World War II. Personnel are identified by Name and Service Number. The specifics of their military service including, place of birth, home address, enlistment date, service branch, military rank, service areas, awards, campaigns, and discharge information are also listed.
